He wakes to the sound of crunching. Cap’n Crunch-ing, if he can make out the picture.
“Dude – what are you doing?”
Dean jumps. Caught with one hand in the cookie jar. Well, cereal box.
“What? You used to eat this stuff all the time.”
“With milk. And I was eight.”
“You should see the girl at the counter, Sam. Cute. But freaky. She was telling me about her religious artefacts. She swears she’s got the face of Christ. On a cracker. Says it’s a talisman to ward off -- c’mon Sam, guess.”
“I dunno, crumbs?” He stares up at the aquamarine ceiling. Sigh. Florida. “Did you ask about the pool? The pattern of drownings you found? Possible poltergeist? Ancient burial grounds?”
“Right. Like in the movie.” Like in the movie? He really shouldn’t let Dean do the research.
“Turns out there’ve only been two. Drunk college kids swimming too soon after eating. Maybe it’s not our thing after all. If you want, we can double check the police files on our way out of town.”
He eyes Dean suspiciously. Out of town?
“Did you know we’re only 80 miles from Daytona? The 500 is this weekend. Funny, I had no idea.”
Got it.There's just something innately appealing (and challenging) about writing in 'round even numbers' (100, 200, 1000, 2000).
I've never been good at writing just 100 or 200 word drabbles, but every once in a while I'll force myself to stay within those limits and it is a great challenge! Makes it more interesting to try to say what you want to say in so few words!
